Another Thursday at the Y

Clarksville Y, black/white conte on Strathmore, 12x9
Thursdays are for Art at the Y.  I showed up with black and white conte, gray paper, and had no idea what I might draw.  I looked out the side door of the Y and loved the clouds (yes, they actually looked like animals heading south).  The road leads to the soccer field.  I took a photo on my iPad, sat at the card table, and drew.  Later I added the soccer boy sculpture with vine charcoal--hope he doesn't mind being moved about 30' north.  In real life, he's closer to the front of the building.

Creating on the iPad is fun but nothing's better than getting dirty with conte or charcoal while drawing.  I was limited in my choice of supplies; sometimes, that's a good thing.

  1. Hallie, love the animal clouds. I'm with you, gtting dirty drawing is so tactile and enjoyable. Moving the sculpture to the perfect spot really works.

    1. Thank you Mary. You're right; there is joy in being messy and having you hands look arty. Sometimes my steering wheel looks arty, too.

  2. This drawing is fun. I think you seem like a fun person, dry humor. It's a gift to be able to translate the fun into visual art.

    1. Thanks Robin. It was fun. My parents had great senses of humor; maybe they passed it down.

  3. Ooooo... kind of spooky, even with all those medicinal animules.
    Do you dream like this?

    1. SamArtDog--spooky?? This to me would be a sweet dream with those little animules. Maybe you've had too many feet of snow out there in the West.

Okay, I should have had some pastel blue paper in my supplies--I wasn't prepared for such a bright day.

    1. Thanks Jane. Sometimes choices are overwhelming--just like at the grocery store.

  5. Oh what a lovely piece, Hallie!!! It reminds me of all that is left after an apocalyptic event too. Those clouds look amazing! Charcoal is the one animal I do not enjoy at all. I like when other people use it but for me it always ends up being a smeary mess, all over my hands and arms, and the use itself is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me!

    1. Thanks CrimsonLeaves. Our new Y is outside town but I never thought of open country looking apocalyptic--I guess it could. The sound of fingernails on chalkboard never bothered me, but the sound of gum-popping drives me crazy.

In an early sculpture class a student didn't want to mess up her manicure--the instructor told her she was in the wrong class. We worked to build up calluses so we could hold the chisel and mallet. Get messy and enjoy it.

  6. I agree...nothing's better than getting messy...love hands covered with charcoal and seeing what can happen with black/white and gray.

    1. Hi Donna. And we need to drop a piece on the floor and step on it! That's when we learn we draw with out foot. (I don't do that at the Y.)

  7. I really like the juxtaposition of the enormous clouds to the statue of the child soccer player as he kicks his dream goal. Child's play on stage in real life is but a dream. It's good to play and dream and see animal friends in the sky.
Your art has layers upon layers upon layers. It is a reflection of you.

    1. Hi PAMO. Your comment really shows why the viewer is such an important part of the art. I felt it but could only draw it and aim for composition. Thank you. You're as good as Harry at interpretation.
