Tied Up

Tied Up, Ink, 4x3
I've been tied up with things other than art and blogging for a while--back problems, a bit of yard work, made some business cards for a friend, got a hair cut, attended an art show opening, etc., etc.  Tomorrow I will begin gathering papers for taxes.  I will also make time to visit blogs and leave comments.

Sunrise, inktense drawing on w/c paper, 6x6
I did manage to work on this drawing at the Y on Thursday.  I had nothing in mind so my friend Terry Smith Denton offered her photos.  She evidently walks very early--like at dawn--and her farm abuts Corp property and the lake.  This was just a portion of one photo.  I haven't finished my trees and I'm not sure it looks like a lake.  The lake (known by two names--Bugg's Island Lake and Kerr Lake) looks quiet but a 143-pound catfish was caught last year.
The above photos were taken with my New iPad (hard to believe), a belated birthday gift from my husband.  He inadvertently ordered two and I convinced him we needed both--one for him; one for me.  They were delivered by UPS on Friday so I've spent the weekend setting up two iPads. Apple was helpful each time I screwed up.  I've read the manual and know how to use the keyboard now and I've played with the camera and made videos of my dog Willie.  My husband has watched a movie on his--he was aiming for DaVinci Code but accidentally rented The Descendants--for a month. I haven't bought any art apps yet but I've looked.  Any recommendations?
Here are a couple of self-portraits using the iPad.

  1. Congratulations on the iPad! I've been having a ton of fun with mine. I recommend two drawing/painting apps: Procreate and Sketcher. One version of Sketcher is free with a paid upgrade. Procreate is about $5.00. I have both. I am still deciding which one I like better.

I laughed out loud at your Photo Booth mirror photo! Play on!

  2. Hi Lifeartist. I'm planning to check out your blog and re-read the entries about iPad paintings. I believe Sketcher is an app I considered. Cameras are such fun for me; the mirror photo might make a good ad for sinus problems (looks like I have antennae, too).

  3. A whole month of Descendants? I hope it's a good movie...

I'm with you about your mirror photo. It's my favorite, also.

    1. A month's not bad--we thought we might have bought the movie. Luckily, I like George Clooney. On this iPad I can post under "reply"--I might have to stop using apostrophes, quotation marks, and hyphens, though.

    2. Hey, I can reply to your reply! So, I did...

  4. Ooh I'd hate to be the guy caught in that night. Makes me claustrophobic and frustrated just looking at it! Love the inktense painting, Hallie. I didn't see the lake at first, but now I do. I refuse to go to one of the pads...I can't stand my husband's phone with the touch screen as it is! LOL

  5. Hallie! Your "tied up" sketch is wonderful. You must promise to keep drawing by hand along with your new digital work. I would miss these fantastic out-of-your-head drawings! (...but/and I know your "electronic work" will be equally provocative). I'm intrigued by inktense pencils...you got great color and contrast from them in the Sunrise drawing. Love it! I'm envious of the ipad! I'll be watching to see what you do next. (Your self portraits are so funny!)

  6. Hi CrimsonLeaves. There are lots of times I feel like this person in the net. I am loving the iPad--just learning the funtions is fun.

Celeste--Thank you. I don't think I could stop sketching if I tried--they're scattered all around the place. Inktense pencils are my second favorite (plain old No. 2's are first); they can be used dry, with a brush, or dipped into water, and the color can be intense. I have great fun with self portraits (I couldn't do this to anyone else).

  7. Sounds like you've been having fun! The Mac boys and girls sure are helpful. We've had to call and visit them a couple of times. They are very good about speaking in layman terms, which I appreciate!
Great sketch and w/c. Your bottom photo is hilarious.

    1. Hi Carol. This is my very first Mac product--I don't think it will be my last. I'm using it to reply; that's why this response is under "reply"--so cool. That doesn't work on my other computers!

    2. The "reply" doesn't work on other computers? I didn't know that. I need to have a look (on a non-mac computer) at my blog and the ones I follow to see what else is different. thanks for the info. Carole

    3. Carole, don't take my word as gospel. I haven't been able to use "reply" on my HP computer or Dell Netbook. I never mess around with any settings; there's probably a way to do it--I'm just too old to learn everything.

    4. I take it back--I'm on the Dell now (which I seldom use)--it's only our newest and biggest, the HP, that doesn't allow "reply." I googled "reply on blogger" and, evidently, I'm not the only one who's had this problem.

  8. Hallie you don't post very often indeed, but when you do it is always great, fun and artful. Love your ironic self portraits and the spectacular colors of the sunrise ! xx

    1. Welcome Vicky-Ivy. I try to post something at least twice a month but am not the schedule-type. I do draw or sketch every day. Thank you for the comment on the sunrise--I'm a late riser, not sure I've ever stood and watched a real one.

  9. Oh YAY!!! You finally joined the fold. Welcome to the land of anything's possible! You are going to have so much fun. Scroll down the sidebar on my blog and click on the red Sam in the black square to read about the Jackson Pollock app. It's fun on the iPad!

I LOVE "The Descendants". Of course it didn't have anything to do with spending a little time in Hawaii with George Clooney. Okay, I lied. Aside from the eye-candy, it's a good movie... really. I'd watch it more than once. Get a bag of popcorn and unplug the phone.

I barked hard at your self-portraits. Funny!

    1. Hi SamArtDog. Yes, I'm finally trying to catch up--thought I'd just skip the cell phone step and go for the New IPad. I must admit I'm in love with it--I have found my soul mate (and he writes down what I say). I demonstrated it to two friends today and they're sold--I haven't been this enthused since I bought the New TurboS Red Beetle in 2002 (it was ruined by a hailstorm only two months later).

I'll check out the Pollock app--I like how you use it. glad I made you bark hard. Bark--not barf, right?

  10. Good luck with your taxes and sorry about your back...

uh oh...I can see that we're in for some real fun now that you've discovered the iPad...looks like a blast so far.

I always love seeing the quirkiness that flows directly out of your antennaed brain down to your finger tips so I also look forward to more 'Tied Ups' and 'Sunrise' too.

Ever so cool are your portraits.

    1. Hi Donna. Tax papers are spread all over my dining room table. It's my husband's back--not mine; seeing someone in pain is painful. I would guess that you see many sunrises. I always enjoy your comments--thanks.

  11. Tied Up says a lot! Also like your lake piece. That must be some lake! That catfish is bigger than I am.

Try looking at Myrna Wacknov's blog for ideas on iPad apps. I saw her do some great sketching and "painting" in a life drawing session. Take the iPad label and you can see some of the different apps she uses. I've been lusting after an iPad myself, so let us know how you like it.

    1. Hi Mary. That catfish weighed only a few pounds more than I--I felt sad about it. There was a delay in weighing (record-breaking) so I think he got mounted instead of being kept alive in a tank.

I've admired Myrna's iPad work. LifeArtist and SamArtDog know a lot of stuff, too. That's what I love about blogging.

  12. Ah Hallie- I'm glad to know everything is clicking along. I laughed about the ordering of two iPads and the month long subscription to Descendants. Jeff and I have been known to order much like this.
Looks like you are really enjoying your new piece of technology. I love the altered photos- the mirror photo in particular is so humorous. Fantastic!
Of course I love your art work- the drawing and painting.
    Thanks for the update.

    1. Hi Pamo. I am clicking all over the place. I just noticed the microphone symbol--i could actually be dictating this instead of typing. The iPad almost understands Southern.

This has something called "photo booth" with nine ways of taking altered photos. I just aimed and clicked. I haven't ordered any apps yet--who knows what I might accidentally end up with. Thanks for the comment.

  13. Congratulations on entering the world of Apple, Hallie I have the first version of the iPad and find it difficult to use for blogging and web work. I don't use mine for drawing but it looks like you are having a great time exploring with yours. Love your Sunrise drawing, the sky captures the exact moment of beautiful sunrise colors.

  14. Thanks Robin. I don't think I'll be using the iPad for blogging--I'm not sure why I needed one, but it is fun though I'm still looking for the delete key. I found backspace; I find something new every day on the keyboard. I'm delaying buying any apps until taxes are finished.
