2013

Graphite and Pigma Pen in Moleskin Sketchbook
I survived the Holidays and spent yesterday taking down and storing my few decorations, changing the whole-house water filter, then making my black-eyed peas and collard greens soup for today's good-luck meal.  I was determined to spend New Year's Day in the studio/workshop but first I in my down coat had to get through all the junk in order to turn on the heat.  While getting organized I came across this sketchbook--first sketch is from March 2010 and the next from June 2011.  This is only the third, and pencil to paper was fun--forget cleaning.

I usually don't make resolutions; they don't last, and I'm sure this one won't.  Can you tell I had taken Willie for a walk earlier?  Actually, this Food Lion bag is from my car--contains snacks--peanut butter cookies and an energy bar.

Happy New Year.

  1. The things that inspire your creative juices always make me chuckle. You must have a very dry sense of humor! Happy New Year, Hallie, may your sketch book last for many years to come.

    1. Hi Robin. In my first real drawing class, we did large brown grocery bags--I loved it. This is my first try at plastic--they droopy and no great sharp creases. My sketchbook will never get filled (and I think I have three); I tend to draw on anything lying around.

  2. It's a lovely sketch! The shading and folds of the bag, the ties of the plastic, the heft of the 'poop' all speak to your ability to turn the 3D into line on paper.

From my perspective, you do quite well in not taking crap. Confrontation isn't always or even often the answer to that whole question of how to keep crap at bay. Sometimes, the trick is in not stepping in the piles, maneuvering around them, and moving away from them.

I admire you Hallie Farber! You care about people, you do the right thing and somehow in there, you take care of yourself when you need to. I resolve to be more like you.

Happy 2013! I'm glad we are friends and I look forward to another year of sharing art!

    1. PAMO, thank you. Maybe it's best to confront crap head-on. Either way, we can't always avoid it--life might be boring without it. Have a great year.

  3. As usual, your work is thought provoking, because what we perceive as crap in your drawing is actually happy snacks! It's a deep message....because conversely, sometimes what we think of as happy snacks..... is crap! This is so profound! haha. Happy New Year. I hope to see many Arting around in Sova drawings/paintings in 2013. :)

  4. Celeste--I simply thought that If I drew my resolution it would be more effective--I'm tired of crap sapping my energy. You're bringing deep thoughts to it; I like your profundity. I look forward to your 30 paintings in 30 days; I don't think I could commit to 3 in 30 days!

One of the other sketches in this book was of my Coach bag hanging on a peg in the doctor's examining room (influenced by your drawing of the same 90s bag last year). I have a black one and a brown one. You'll probably never know how much we enjoy your art works and blog.

  6. Hi Jane. When I finished the drawing I ate the peanut butter cookies and energy bar (made from peanuts and chocolate). I'm not swearing off the good crap--I'll always be a snacker. Have a great year.

  7. Love your sketch. Hope it doesn't move.
Did Celeste really say HAPPY SNACKS?? Profound, indeed.

  8. Thanks SamArtDog. It would move only if it was really hot outside.

Yep, Celeste really said Happy Snacks. Well, trees make you happy; snacks make me happy--it's that happiest time of the year.

  10. Hallie,

A great resolution, it's in the bag.

My experience with resolutions is that they start too late and end too soon or in one year and out the other.

    Happy New Year!

  11. Hallie, wonderful pencil drawing. Graphite is a real treat, isn't it. For some reason when I saw "Take no crap" I immediately had the phrase "It's a wrap" pop in my head, which makes no sense to me! The lovely folds do resemble a woman's wrap, now that I think of it.

Did you see Myrna Wacknov's use of IPad art in a collage? http://myrnawacknov.blogspot.com/2013/01/new-process-progress.html
I would like to try that because I am on a collage binge.

Keep on creating and Happy Holidays!

    1. Hi Mary, End of the year you probably thought, "That's a wrap." I do follow Myrna's blog; I tend to paint on my iPad--all those colors and brushes are at my fingertip (or stylus). I have books about collage but have never tried it. Wishing you the best in 2013.

  12. I've never seen a bag like that except on the end of a stick! You know, putting Willie's crap in the same bag as the food you eat could be trouble for you some day. The crap of the food lion must be even larger! Happy New Year!

  13. Hi Dan. You must be thinking of the lion in the Weem-o-wop song. Here in southern Va, Food Lion is a grocery chain, and I do recycle their plastic bags. My socks go from the dryer into a bag; then upstairs. With a bag of white socks and a bag of dark socks, I'm ready to travel. Of course, every coat has a Willie bag stashed in the pocket.

  14. Hi Hallie... Great mantra for 2013. I just had the opportunity to make use of it. I hope you don't mind me globbing on... :) I love your fun little drawing. I nearly always leave your blog with a big grin that lasts for quite a while. Thanks for that.
