Halloween on Commerce Street

On my street we like our natural decorations--very old half-dead trees, vultures, and spiders. Maybe that explains why no trick-or-treaters showed up. Now I have to eat all that candy!

These photos were taken on or from my front porch.  Happy Halloween.

  2. This is so funny. Scare those kids away. They aren't worthy to trick or treat if a few sweet birds and trees and creatures scare them away. No candy for them! Great photos.

  3. Hi Mary. I see this tree from my kitchen window--grab the camera and go to the porch. Parts of the tree have been removed; squirrels, crows, ospreys, hawks, and woodpeckers also love it. We (neighbors and I) think it's cool when the vultures show up. In the top photos they were drying off after a heavy downpour.

  4. Hi Dan. Actually it was raining and cold tonight so I think most kids and parents went home after the downtown shops' trick-or-treating.

  5. We only had a few knocks at the door ourselves. But your street sure knows how to make Halloween fun, Hallie!

  6. Great photos! I love crows and the movie Birds. We had 30 kids come to out door this year. The stars were out along with the fireworks. My kitty slept through most of it.

  7. Incredible surroundings....quite scary actually on a dark night .....but I suppose you know your 'monsters' :-))
Great photos Hallie, you have got an excellent eye!

  8. Are those turkey vultures? Outstanding! When they occupy a tree in this hood, it's a good excuse for everyone in the hood to go out with a beer and watch. Obviously, we don't need much of an excuse.

  9. Conservativelybohemian. I always buy the candy I like--peanut butter cups, butterfingers (all gone), snickers and York patties). It doesn't get wasted.

Hi Carol. Some years we have carloads of kids--we never know. I love all of Hitchcock's movies; especially The Birds.

  10. Jane, my street is really interesting. I like all the two-legged and four-legged creatures here.

SamArtDog. Yes, they are turkey vultures. Some neighborhoods actually shoot at them; my street says, "Oh, look--the vultures are back; I wonder what that means." Every thing has a purpose. I could hardly believe that they sat on the tree for almost an hour with their wings spread to dry. Maybe I should grab a beer instead of a camera.

  11. Wow! It has been a long time since I have seen a vulture.Very appropriate and scary for Halloween. We rarely get Trick or Treaters, but my son always buys enough candy to feed an army, then he enjoys eating it thinking he has to keep from wasting it. Of course I can't resist eating a more than I need. Trix bars are my favorite.

  12. Hi Eva. I see the "clean-up crew" often on the sides of our country roads. I like candy if it contains chocolate and peanuts/peanut butter. I could probably skip the chocolate and just go for the peanuts.

  13. goodnight...that is a lot of vultures! I am very impressed. Why are they all there...is something dead in the near vicinity? This is very Halloween-y!

  15. Hi Celeste. I think the vultures meet here to get their assignments for the day--probably the tallest tree on this side of town. I've never actually seen them on the ground in town; maybe they gossip (this could be the breakfast group).

  16. Hi Robin--I can't get very close to the birds--the tree is at the top of the block; three houses up. I did include part of the tree in a painting of my house.

  17. What great photos! I've never seen that many vultures at one time. Too cool!!! How could anyone not love that spider? She's a beauty.

Enjoy your candy. Thankfully, we had enough trick-or-treaters to nearly empty our candy bowl...

  18. Hi Don. That spider was cool; she swung from the screen door for about three days. Then I saw her on the porch floor--upside down with legs curved up. I don't know how long spiders live. Most of the candy is still in the bag.

  21. Hi JB. Welcome back. Computer problems--I've had a few. Bought a new Windows 7 computer and, for 9 months, I thought my brain had shrunk. I finally learned that my Corel graphic suite 12 didn't work with Win7 (had to upgrade to X5); then had to buy a new printer. $$$$. I've heard that Apple is the way to go.

Hi Donna. Catharses Aura; I'll try to remember that--great name. I drove to the other side of town several times to photograph them on a tower; it's nice that they sometimes visit our street. I use these photos on birthday cards.
