O Brother

O Brother Bob No. 4
I had a photo of my brother, the collector--taken about three years ago--with a flash (not a good idea).  I thought I'd do some quick practice portraits with Tombow markers.  Unlike my iPad apps, there are no undo or erase buttons.  This No. 4 took forever because I really wanted just ONE to be recognizable.  The picture behind him is a selfie he sent me as a joke when he added another camera to his collection--he and I never throw anything away so he should know better.
O Brother Bob No. 3

No. 3 includes a few of the many paintings he has hanging at his house; however, the woman in the actual painting doesn't really look like she's ready to attack.  Behind him is my recollection of a painting by K.A. Colorado, a very nice artist Bob brought by for a visit in the Fall.  The book is a big, beautiful one on Francis Bacon, a gift from Bob to me.
O Brother Bob No. 2
Bob is a book collector/seller and gave me some titles of his favorite books (and a few I made up).  I screwed up his right eye so he's being socked by his Blue Boy sculpture (which is actually about four feet tall).  Okay, the punch works on several levels because he was Mom's favorite child!

O Brother No. 1
So this was the first, drawn upside-down quickly with the markers.  When I turned it upright, I thought, "Oh, Lordy--he looks three sheets in the wind."  This one was based on the actual photo--he's sitting in front of a beautiful hand-painted screen--filled with flowers, with the modern lamp just behind him.

Bob is one of those truly nice guys; I'm lucky to have him as a brother and neighbor.  I tried Tombow markers because I admired the work of Jean Spitzer.  My work is zilch compared to hers, but it was fun.  These are 14x10 and on hot press w/c paper.

  2. Ha ha I am guessing your brother Tom has just as good a sense of humour as you! Do you two laugh a lot together?
I've never thought of using a doll punching to fix an eye before..... clever! Thanks for the link. I'll go check JS out. Happy May to you, Halie.

    1. Carole, we both laugh a lot, and act up when there's a camera around. Wonder what Tom does? :) Happy May to you.

  3. Hallie, so glad you posted! I've been worried about you!! Hope all is well. I love all these paintings of Bob and your stories to go along with each one. I'm sitting here with a stupid smile on my face (stupid because I am alone in a dark room in front of a lit computer monitor and I'm smiling stupidly)...Bob sounds like a character and I laughed out loud at his selfie. You two seem to have a similar sense of humor!

    1. Hi Crimson Leaves--it has been a while. I started these back in January; thought it would be quick and fun. I should know that I am never fast. Bob and I enjoy telling our funny stories of growing up here in the South (he should write a book).

  4. it's been a while since you've posted, glad you are back. I don't know anything about tombow markers but #4 makes Bob seem so real and approachable, my favorite in the group.

    1. Thanks Robin. Wasn't sure I'd make it back--my old way of posting photos on my blog didn't work; I was frustrated for a while. I like No. 4 also; it looked too formal without the other Bob on the wall.

  5. I just love these Hallie! Bob does look like a truly fun and nice guy in your portraits of him. You are so talented with rendering the face. Your paintings are sculptural- I'm sure your love of sculpture is a factor.
I agree that Jean does remarkable work with Tombow markers. Both of you have very distinctive styles.
Wonderful to see you here today! Yay! It's gonna be a great day!

    1. Hi PAMO. I do tend to build paintings--add things as I go along, probably that love of story-telling. I thought of "This is Your Life" when I began adding book titles to his bookcase. My style with the markers was that of a child with a new box of crayons--jump in and make marks. Next time, if there is one, I'll try to think before applying those permanent marks.

    1. Thank you Jane. He does have smiling (or mischievous) eyes, and I was attempting to catch that--that's why there are four!

  7. Well, this is just outstanding! I especially like it because today is my brother's birthday (in Heaven). Brothers are great, aren't they? I love every one of your portraits of him. Each one is uber cool. I can't help it... the one with the Francis Bacon book is my fav. :)

    1. Brothers are nice, Celeste. As a painting, I like No. 3, too. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite Bob so I had to keep going.

I know you miss your brother--he was much too young to leave.

  8. Since I don't know Bob, I can only look at the portraits objectively. And objectively I can say that they are all terrific. Each one slightly different. But in all of them Bob has a bit of a mischievous look. I LOL'd at the one where he is getting socked in the eye.

    Great work.

    1. Thank you Carol. There was no way to fix the eyes or add eyeglasses in No. 2 so I borrowed a friend's hand (a found object), then added the books and sculpture. I enjoy the spur-of-the-moment building of paintings.

I really like the watercolor figures you've been posting.

  9. What a collection, each one different yet connected in a way through his personality that we can make out! I think these will make a wonderful collage of his facets. Loved this post so much Hallie and you are so lucky to live next to your brother, I know how it is to live so far from loved ones.

  10. Goodness, Hallie, it took me four months to find this post! I love your sense of adventure. I also like what you said about building as you go. So creative. I especially like No. 4, but there is something very lively about No. 3. It brought to mind that rascal Ben Franklin. I'm sure your brother brings you many laughs.

I do hope you have some time in the near future to post art. Miss seeing you here.
